State Airport of the year: Mason County Airport

Mason County Airport has long served as a vital gateway to its community and, in recent years, has made significant progress in infrastructure, service capacity and regional economic impact.

The airport recently completed a series of improvements to enhance safety and operational efficiency. These include new electrical and lighting systems, airfield drainage upgrades, pavement maintenance and remarking, and updates to the terminal building. A new turnaround–run up pad supports safer, more efficient aircraft movement. The airport also installed a wildlife perimeter fence, undertook extensive mesquite removal and relocated deer that had been living on airport property.

“Through recent infrastructure enhancements, strategic planning and a clear focus on economic impact, the airport has emerged as a model of regional development and aviation excellence among small, rural airports,” said Kari Campbell, director of client relations and innovative solutions at Woolpert.

In the past year, the airport finalized an extensive planning study that resulted in a comprehensive update to the Airport Layout Plan and Exhibit A. This effort established a foundation for long-term growth while maintaining compliance with design standards and best practices. A recent hangar investment study also outlined a phased development approach to meet increasing demand for hangar space driven by activity from both local and visiting aviators.

This progress reflects the leadership and commitment of County Judge Sheree Hardin and County Commissioner Dave Underwood. Their vision and guidance helped ensure each project was completed to a high standard and aligned with the needs of the county’s citizens and businesses.
