Meteorological Evaluation Tower Registration

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have grown concerned about the increasing number of Meteorological Evaluation Towers (METs), which are used to evaluate locations for future wind turbines.

In response, the 84th Texas Legislature added Transportation Code §21.071, requiring certain METs to be painted and marked to improve visibility and enhance aviation safety. The statute also directs TxDOT to provide a mechanism for any person who owns, operates or intends to erect a MET to notify the agency and register their towers.

The registration application requests the following information:

  • Contact Information
  • MET Tower Location Details
  • MET Owner Information
  • FAA Obstruction Evaluation Results

Owners and operators, visit https://www.txdot.gov/business/aviation/meteorological-evaluation-towers.html to register a new MET or update existing tower information.
